The stopover has rapidly become the best deal for savvy travellers. If you’re travelling on a long haul flight, why not get off the plane at the halfway point and add an extra country to your trip? It’s an opportunity to stretch your legs, get some decent sleep, and explore an extra city (or two) that you would’ve otherwise flown over.

For most airlines, a stopover is a visit of at least 24 hours or longer in a city. The best part is, most airlines will allow a stopover for free or at very minimal charge. Some will even allow passengers to stay as long as a week, while others permit multiple stops on a journey. It’s basically a two-for-one special!

Here are six stopovers to consider when booking your next trip:

1. Hong Kong, China

Why go? Hong Kong is buzzy, alive, and rarely sleeps. Foodies will love this city for its non-stop buffet of international cuisine. Don’t miss Dim Sum in a Cantonese restaurant or High Tea at the swanky Intercontinental Hotel. At sunset, take the tram to Victoria Peak and snap killer photos of the skyline. Fashionistas can cruise for designer labels near Tsim Sha Tsui or dirt cheap bargains in the Temple Street Night Market. For a walk on the wild side, I recommend the Dragon’s Back trail – a 4-hour trek along the South China Sea declared “Best Urban Hike in Asia” by Time Magazine.

Airline:            Cathay Pacific

Destinations:   Over 167 destinations worldwide, including North America, South America, Europe, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Southeast Asia, Middle East & Indian Subcontinent, Mainland China & Northeast Asia.

 Blue Lagoon, Iceland

2. REYKJAVIK, ICELAND

Why go? Seven days is plenty to explore Iceland’s rugged scenery, shops, fresh seafood, and volcanoes. In the winter, you can get awesome views of the Aurora Borealis outside of Reykjavik. Take a dip in the Blue Lagoon – a geothermal spa formed out of a lava field. I loved relaxing in the warm waters and it’s good for the body. Read about my past trip here.

Airline:            Icelandair

Departs:          Toronto or Halifax (May to September). Year-round USA departures.

Destinations:   Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Scotland, Finland, England, Spain, Italy, France, Russia, Switzerland, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, USA, Canada.

Paris loveWant to get locked in for life?  People in Paris do!  Outside Notre Dame Cathedral, thousands of lovers are writing their names on locks, securing them to the bridge’s fence, and then tossing the key into the Seine below. C’est tellement romantique!

But it’s driving city officials crazy – despite their many unsuccessful attempts with bolt cutters, the lovers keep coming back in droves!  As of yet, the bureaucrats haven’t been able to overcome the power of love, and the bridge remains love-locked.

13. IsraelGiven the flurry of media attention, Israel and Palestine may not your first choice for a vacay destination. But I’d like to challenge readers to open their minds and look past the political conflict. There’s so much culture and history to explore in this land, and it’s a shame that many travellers skip it. Before you write off Israel and Palestine, consider some of these highlights:

GETTING THERE

Air Canada and El Al fly direct from Toronto to Tel Aviv. Another option is to stopover in a European city en route, via Turkish Airlines (Istanbul), Alitalia (Rome), Air France (Paris), British Airways (London), or Iberia (Madrid).

1. Azzahra hotel

WHERE TO STAY

The Azzahra Hotel & Restaurant (East Jerusalem): This hidden gem is getting rave reviews from savvy travellers. Sitting on the edge of the Old City, the Azzahra Hotel (above) has spartan but squeaky clean rooms – all equipped with comfy beds, mini-bars, air con, and free wifi. Hallways are lovingly adorned with traditional decor, and the restaurant serves some of the best Palestinian cuisine in the city. It’s also close to historic sites, museums, shops, and food stands. Above all, staff will bend over backwards to help you. When I was lost at night, the hotel staff picked me up free of charge (!). For $110/night, this boutique hotel gets top marks for hospitality, location, and comfort.

Firkin Toronto

The British are coming! That’s right – the Firkin Group is shaking things up with a dramatic re-launch for their 25th anniversary. Nine Firkin pubs across the Toronto now feature a contemporary Britannia decor and a delicious new menu. My friend Jen and I got a sneak peak into this British Invasion of pubs and sampled a few mouth-watering dishes.

1. Decor (3)

I arrived at the Quail & Firkin expecting a grotty watering hole with greasy food. Instead, I was greeted by a sophisticated gastropub with a bright dining area, cozy booths, and a lively atmosphere. It was so warm and inviting on a cold winter’s day.

2. DecorThe Quail has made the little things count by adding fun and trendy accents to the decor, such as Union Jacks, maps of the London Tube, a fireplace, and Persian rugs. I felt like I was across the pond, ready to enjoy a pint with my mates.

3. Comfy in our boothOnce I got comfy in our booth, I studied the new menu. I really wanted one of everything! I couldn’t decide between pub classics, such as traditional fish n’ chips, or finer fares like the Bacon and Cider Chicken and Pan-Roasted Snapper. In the end, we ordered a tasting menu of the Quail’s most popular dishes:

The American Colony Hotel, East Jerusalem

Long before my trip to Israel and Palestine, I was hearing MAJOR hype about the American Colony Hotel in East Jerusalem. For decades, it’s been a hub for politicians, diplomats, foreign correspondents, and famous people like Lawrence of Arabia, Bob Dylan, Tony Blair, and John le Carré. But what was so special about this historic hotel in East Jerusalem? I travelled 9300 km to find out.

Within seconds of arriving, I knew my visit was going to be epic. With its leafy gardens, old stone walls, and dreamy atmosphere, the American Colony Hotel offered sanctuary from the heat and racket of Jerusalem. It felt like a romantic rural estate, but with modern upgrades.

At check in, I was greeted by friendly staff and a glass of champagne. I relaxed in the garden courtyard while my heavy bags were whisked away and my room was prepared.

I nearly died when I saw my room. I was upgraded to a luxurious suite, complete with a living room, a spa-like bathroom, and terrace. I slept soundly in the king-sized bed with its plump pillows and cozy duvet. The hotel staff had already delivered my luggage, so my only task was to unwind. No wonder Tony Blair made this hotel his home!
